CRANBORNE
ANCIENT TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
Year 6/7
History Field Trip
This visit
was a great success for Mrs Siran's class. Cranborne Ancient Technology Centre
has an international reputation for enabling people to experience the past
realities of daily life. Our boys learned ancient skills in an authentic
landscape, from building ancient structures to blacksmithing and fire-making.

The centre
is based on archaeological evidence from a range of periods including the
Neolithic, Iron Age (Celtic), Viking, Roman and Anglo Saxon eras. Our boys
were able, under staff supervision, to help light a small fire under controlled
conditions, using flints and sphagnum moss. They had a tour of the site and took
part in historical re-enactment activity with shields, which George especially
enjoyed very much.

Everyone
took turns to tend the fire and cook lunch, with help from the staff. Then we
played a Viking table-top game and shared the story of Beowulf. There was just
time to tidy up before heading back to school.

The boys'
levels of engagement were impressive and they really enjoyed themselves.
Thanks to Mrs Siran, Natalie, Lorna and Mr Whelan whose hard work and efforts to
provide such a fun day made the Field Trip so successful.
