St Edward’s victorious in Hampshire Football Tournament

The St Edward’s football team maintained their excellent start to the season, securing another trophy at Hampshire FA HQ in Basingstoke. The Senior first team were emphatic winners of the competition and the second team put in a noble effort finishing 3rd in their qualifying group and narrowly missing out on the semi finals.

The first team were aided considerably by defenders Joey and Montel’s excellent work and some truly outstanding goal keeping from Cesar. The team conceded only two goals in the entire tournament and laid a very strong foundation for the attackers to build on. Scott finished the tournament with 8 goals to his name whilst Rory, playing in his first tournament for St Edward’s, bagged 5. Joe played an important role as our revolving sub and Tom came over from the second team for the final two games following an injury to Joey.

In the second team, fine performances from Tom and Jamie in particular helped them to their best finish and shows the strength of our School’s football at this time as St Edward’s was the only school to put out two sides in the event.

A big thanks to all the staff and pupils taking part and to the Hampshire Football Association for organising the event.

Next up for the boys is an 11 a side fixture at home to Lakeside before the annual in-School fixture between the Senior and Middle School groups for the prestigious Golden Gnome trophy.

The Golden Gnome

The 2011 Golden Gnome football match proved an absolute cracker. The fixture is played every year on the final day of the Autumn term before our boys depart for their Christmas break. The fixture sees the senior boys of the school, from year groups 11 and 12, take on a team formed from the younger year groups.

The senior team started the game positively and had the majority of chances early on. They deservedly took the lead with a fine strike from 25 yards from Scott, which beat the despairing dive of the keeper and flew in on off the post. Tom had the best chance for the middle school boys but his shot from distance was well saved.

Middle School started the second half strongly and the pressure eventually told when Theo smashed home a half volley after his header had been blocked.

With neither team able to score again the game finished level and went to penalties. Andy, Scott and Josh scored for the senior team whilst Tom, Montel and man of the match, Rory, converted their attempts. With both teams having missed two penalties the tie went to sudden death. With Middle School again unable to find the back of the net it was left to goal keeper Cesar to score and secure the 2011 trophy for the Senior boys.

This was another superb display of football from all the boys involved and we look forward to another year of high end action which will include the 2012 Melchet Cup, the annual Staff vs Pupils Challenge Match and numerous schools fixtures. This coming year we will defend our title in the Hampshire BESD Schools 5-a-side Championship and, crucially, our engage in their future National Championship title. Before we know it, we will be sharing with readers the next instalment in the glittering history of the Golden Gnome.
