At St Edward's we firmly believe that Literacy is at the heart of raising the academic, social and emotional standards of our pupils.  A significant proportion of our pupils at any one time may have either dyslexia or an associated learning disability.  Each pupil is assessed on entering the School and those who are under achieving follow an individual literacy programme in addition to their English Lessons.

The dedicated staff team at St Edward's is constantly seeking new ways to encourage and motivate our pupils.  We place a strong emphasis on speaking and listening within the School, in the knowledge that acquisition of these skills is imperative for success in later life.

Many of our pupils enter St Edward's at or below Level 4, the target set by the Government for all primary school children at year 6. Top priority is given to these pupils both in and out of the classroom, in order for them to reach at least a functional level of literacy.  Certification and prizes are awarded regularly to encourage success and provide incentives for further learning. All members of our staff team show their commitment to the importance of literacy on a daily basis and older pupils fulfil the function of Literacy 'buddies' to help and encourage reading skills in younger pupils.
